And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the LORD or the work that he had done for Israel.
Who is responsible for your children’s spiritual growth? Who is to teach them the truth about God? Who will show them what it looks like to follow Jesus day to day? If you are a parent or grandparent—TAG! YOU’RE IT!
Today’s passage describes the sad story of parents and grandparents who failed life’s most important assignment. For whatever reason (maybe they were too busy?) they did not share God’s amazing work with their children. They did not allow their children the faith-stretching experiences that would help them own their faith. As a result, this spiritual negligence produced a generation “who did not know the Lord.”
So, how will you make sure that doesn’t happen in your home? Are you owning the responsibility or “delegating” it to the Christian school or church? Are you teaching your family about the Lord and backing it up with your actions? Are you placing your children in situations where they can experience God’s faithfulness? Are you giving them the opportunity to own their faith?
Genuine faith is not something you pass down like an heirloom. Real faith must be learned, seen, and personally experienced. That’s our job as parents. Once again—TAG! YOU’RE IT!

- Ask God to help you determine a realistic plan for teaching your children his word in a personal and powerful way. Ask God to help you be diligent to impart truth and discerning to let your children experience faith personally.
- Make the plan. Now work the plan.
Lord, help me teach (show and tell) my children about you in an age-appropriate way. Please don’t let my living legacy be described by Judges 2:10. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
