Names of God: Wonderful Counselor

by | May 4, 2024 | Daily Devotion, Names of God | 0 comments

He said it was going to happen…700 years before it did! The Old Testament prophet Isaiah described the coming of the Messiah using four names to explain his character. The first name Isaiah revealed is Wonderful Counselor.

Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

The Hebrew word for “wonderful” is pele. It means “extraordinary,” “beyond understanding,” “miraculous.” The Hebrew word for “counselor” is ya’as. It means to “advise,” “exhort,” or “admonish.” Jesus is the Wonderful Counselor, the extraordinary adviser. He is wonderful in his person — there is no one like him. He is wonderful in his work — he did what no one else could do. Jesus came to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). He is wonderful!

There is no counselor like Jesus. In him are hidden “all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). He is omniscient—he knows everything there is to know about everything there is to know. He perceives the thoughts and intentions of every heart. He explains to us that our root problem is sin. Then, he provides the remedy. When we trust in Christ, he sends another counselor who takes up residence in us! The Holy Spirit guides, comforts, convicts, challenges, confirms, and reminds us that we belong to Jesus. You can’t pay for that kind of counseling. In fact…it’s free!

Lord Jesus,
Thank you for your constant presence, which guides and directs my path. Thank you for showing me the condition of my heart and providing the eternal remedy.
In your name, I pray. Amen.
