Names of God: The Lord Who Heals

We live in a broken world in need of healing. Sometimes restoration is necessary between two people whose friendship has been damaged, or from a dating relationship where infatuation turned to disillusionment turned to rejection, or a husband and wife whose relationship has fallen on hard times. Sometimes, we need emotional healing when a hurt drives us to discouragement, even despair. Today, let me introduce you to Yahweh Rapha.

After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, they traveled for three days without finding water. Finally, they reached a place where there was water, but it was so bitter they couldn’t drink it. The people began to grumble and asked Moses, “What shall we drink?” God instructed Moses to throw a log into the water, which became sweet. God used this as a teaching moment and proclaimed this promise.

Exodus 15:26
If you will diligently listen to the voice of the Lord your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, your healer.

“The Lord, your healer” is the Hebrew name Yahweh Rapha. Rapha means to “heal,” “cure,” “restore,” or “make whole.” In Scripture, we learn over and over again that Yahweh is the source of all healing. Jesus demonstrated God’s physical healing power when he walked on earth. And he provided the way to spiritual healing when he died for our sins on the cross. The most important relationship that requires healing is between man and God. Jesus is the only one who can deliver the cure and provide complete restoration.

Are you in need of spiritual healing? Do you need a new or renewed relationship with God? Cry out to Yahweh Rapha. Are you in need of physical healing? Do you need God to restore your health? Cry out to Yahweh Rapha. Are you in need of emotional healing? The psalmist says that God “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). Cry out to the Lord, your healer—Yahweh Rapha.

Yahweh Rapha,
Today, I cry out to you. I need to be restored, cured, and made whole. You are the Lord who heals. I need your healing touch. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
