Names of God: The Lord Is My Shepherd

David spent much of his youth in the fields taking care of sheep. He led them through mountain valleys to find luscious green pastures. He made sure they had plenty of water. He protected them from wild animals. When a sheep strayed, he found it and brought it back to the safety of the flock. David knew what it meant to be a shepherd. Later in his life, when he became king of Israel, he reflected on the living God and wrote this psalm.

Psalm 23:1-3a
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.

David described God as Yahweh Rohi — “the Lord is my shepherd.” He is the One who guides and protects me. The Lord provides and cares for me. When I stray, he knows where to find me. Later, Jesus would use this name for himself. He said, “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep” (John 10:14-15).

Maybe you need help from Yahweh Rohi. You are spiritually hungry and need the Shepherd to lead you to a place of provision. You are tired, thirsty, and long for restful quiet time by still waters. You are fearful and need protection. You have wandered away. You need to be rescued by the Shepherd and brought back home. Jesus—the Good Shepherd—laid down his life for you. He loves you with an eternal love. Rest in the care of the Good Shepherd.

Lord,
Thank you for being my Shepherd. Thank you for finding me, forgiving me, providing for me, protecting me, and bringing me safely home. Thank you for the promise that one day you will deliver me safely home to heaven. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
