Names of God: Mighty God

by | May 5, 2024 | Daily Devotion, Names of God | 0 comments

Seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus, the prophet Isaiah proclaimed that the Messiah was coming. Isaiah described the coming Savior with four names that explain his character—Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace. Yesterday, we considered the name Wonderful Counselor. Today, let’s look at the name Mighty God.

Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called…Mighty God….

Mighty God is translated from the Hebrew name El Gibbor. The word gibbor, means “strong” or “courageous.” Mighty God describes God’s strength as a mighty warrior who fights for his people. David described God as “the Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!” (Psalm 24:8). Moses praised God for being “the great, the mighty, and the awesome God” (Deuteronomy 10:17). Nehemiah proclaimed that God was “the great, the mighty, and the awesome God” as well, adding, that God always “keeps covenant and steadfast love” (Nehemiah 9:32).

Jesus is El Gibbor—the Mighty God. He is the One who fought for us all the way to the cross. He defeated Satan and death, rising triumphantly back to life. El Gibbor did for us what we could not do for ourselves. He died for our sins, rose with power from the grave, and provided the way for us to have eternal life. Jesus is the Mighty God!

Lord Jesus,
You are my El Gibbor. You are my Mighty God. I praise you for entering the battle and winning it for me. Thank you for providing my victory over death and an eternal home in heaven. I pray in your name. Amen.
