Names of God: Mighty Creator

by | Apr 2, 2024 | Daily Devotion, Names of God | 1 comment

The first name that God used to describe himself in Scripture is the Hebrew word, Elohim. This name means “Mighty Creator” and appears over 2,500 times in the Bible. It describes God’s power, sovereignty, and authority over all things. Elohim is the plural form of El and is used as a “plural of majesty” or a “plural of intensity” to elevate the greatness of God’s person.

Genesis 1:1
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

In the beginning, Elohim already existed. He is eternal, dependent on no one or no thing for existence. Elohim created the heavens and the earth. The power of his voice formed substance from nothing, brought order to chaos, and exploded light into the vast darkness. It was Elohim who created man and woman in his own image and breathed into them the breath of life.

The powerful Creator is not finished creating. Today, Elohim creates new hearts. Do you feel empty? Elohim will fill you with meaning and significance. Do you seem lost? Elohim knows where you are and will walk with you step by step.  Is your life in chaos? Elohim will bring order and peace. Are you stumbling in darkness? Elohim will provide the light. Those who know Elohim can trust him. Elohim is ready to give you all that you need.

Heavenly Father,
You are Elohim—sovereign, all-powerful, and Creator of all things. You are my God, my Father. You created the world from nothing. You can accomplish everything that needs to be done in my life. You are the Mighty Creator. Today, I put my full trust in you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
