Names of God: God Most High

Worry, anxiety, fear—have you ever experienced those emotions? No doubt you have. Even the strongest believer has been riddled with fear. But thankfully, for those who follow Jesus, these emotions are “drive-bys,” not destinations. We need not live with anxiety, worry, or fear because we serve God Most High.

After Abram defeated Kedorlaomer and rescued his nephew, Lot, he met Melchizedek, the priest of God Most High— in Hebrew, El-Elyon. The priest blessed Abraham “by God Most High” and acknowledged God as the “Possessor of heaven and earth.” Melchizedek also praised El-Elyon as the One who had given Abram victory over his enemies.

Genesis 14:19-20
And he blessed him and said, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!”

El-Elyon means “Highest” or “Exalted One.” This name describes God’s sovereignty and supremacy. He sovereignly protects and delivers his people, and God is supreme over all the false gods that we are tempted to worship. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the “Son of the Most High.” The Holy Spirit is called “the power of the Most High.” And true believers are called “servants of the Most High.”

A child of God does not have to live a hand-wringing life filled with fear and anxiety. Our Father is One whose power cannot be matched. He is in control of all things. Nothing catches God off guard or takes him by surprise. You can trust him with your life, along with all your issues and concerns. God gave Abram victory over his enemies, and he can handle your challenges as well.

God Most High,
I acknowledge you as the highest, most exalted God. You are all-powerful and in complete control of all things. You are the Possessor of heaven and earth. There is none like you. I give my fears, anxieties, and challenges over to you. I am unable to defeat the things that stand in my way, but you are the One who brings victory every time. Thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
