John 16:12-15

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.

The ministry of the Holy Spirit is all-encompassing. He teaches, encourages, assures, prays for, and empowers us. He is always there to give us exactly what we need when we need it. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would “guide [us] into all truth.” In his letter to the Romans, the apostle Paul said that those who are guided by the Spirit are the children of God (Romans 8:13-14).

In Scripture, some instructions for our lives are recorded in black and white. These truths are specifically revealed. However, there are times when we are confronted with a decision and have no specific Scriptural guidance. How can we know what we are supposed to do when the answer is not clearly laid out?

It is the Spirit who directs us when we are confronted with these types of decisions. He is our Counselor who opens our eyes to see the right path to take. It is His ministry to lead us into all truth. David said, “I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me” (Psalm 16:7). Even when we close our eyes in rest, the Spirit speaks to our hearts.

Father, thank You for the guiding ministry of the Holy Spirit. May I seek and follow His counsel. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
