Deuteronomy 4:9

Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children….

The plagues on Egypt. The parting of the Red Sea. Manna from heaven. Meat provided to eat. The Words of Life given on Mt. Sinai. Protection from enemies. Sandals that didn’t wear out. God’s presence as a cloud leading during the day and as a ball of fire by night. These are simply a sample of the signs and wonders that God did for Israel during their desert wanderings and God tells them not to forget. In fact, they are to teach them to their children and grandchildren.

The same God that led Israel is the same God at work in our lives today. Our list of God’s work in our lives is just as powerful and miraculous as his work in the nation of Israel. He has delivered us from the slavery of sin, parted barriers, and provides us with food, clothing, and shelter. We have his Word—his love letter to us. He lives within us—always present with us through his Spirit. We can never let his great work depart from our hearts all the days of our lives.

Talking Points

  • Ask God to help you review the great things he has done in your life. As he brings his great blessings to mind, thank him and praise him for his work—even the challenging times. Make a list to review often.
  • Ask God to give you a special teaching moment with your children and grandchildren to share God’s amazing work in your life. Let them hear from you about God’s great blessings.

Father, when I don’t take time to review what you have done in the past I live with a what have you done for me lately mindset. Forgive me. Help me to reflect often on the ways you have worked. And help me make your work in my life known to my children and grandchildren. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
