Psalm 22:6-11  

But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by everyone, despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads. “He trusts in the LORD,” they say, “let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.” Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast. From birth I was cast on you; from my mother’s womb you have been my God. Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.

David was experiencing vicious and prolonged attacks. He was being ridiculed and insulted. His trust in God was mocked. He was alone. There was no one to help him. Yet, even in his dire state, David confirmed his trust in God. He confessed, “…you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.”

This psalm, written by David in real time, aptly describes the circumstances of Jesus at the crucifixion. Hanging on the cross, Jesus was scorned and despised. Many hurled insults at Him saying, “He trusts in God. Let God rescue him…” (Matt. 27:43). No other psalm is quoted more frequently in the New Testament.

Maybe today you feel like the enemy is getting the best of you. You feel scorned by friends or family. You feel mocked by those in your life. You feel alone. Read today’s passage again. God brought you out of the womb for a purpose. He will turn your heart to trust in Him. He has been and always will be your God. Even when trouble is near and there is no one to help, your heavenly Father is right there by your side.

Heavenly Father, I am going through a tough stretch. I feel alone. People are coming at me from all sides. Some mock my trust in You. But I will continue to trust. You are my God. Trouble may be near but You are nearer still. In Jesus’ name I trust. Amen.
