1 Samuel 20:16-17

So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, “May the LORD call David’s enemies to account.”  And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.

The story of David and Jonathan is one of true friendship. The bond they shared was a deep and binding love based on the same purpose for life and the same passion for God. It was a love stronger than blood, greater than royal privilege, and threaded with a true sense of justice.

Jonathan’s love for David was genuinely sacrificial. He lost so David could win. He risked his life so David could reign. He stepped aside so David could step up. Protecting David from Saul, Jonathan’s jealous father, meant no throne for Jonathan. Yet, he knew that neither tradition nor lineage could stand in God’s way. He was determined to obey God rather than men.

Jonathan had the second greatest commandment down: Love your neighbor as yourself. No doubt that started with a heart committed to the greatest commandment: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. When we start by loving God with our whole being it flows from there. So if you are having trouble with the second greatest commandment; start with the first.

Father, give me the desire and commitment to love You with all my heart, soul, mind and strength. Then let that love flow to those You have placed in my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
