The Inspired Word

OK, time for some theology. Put today’s passage under the heading “Inspiration of Scripture.” Peter’s words here serve as a proof text verifying God as the author of the Bible by using the pen and personalities of men. Check out this passage.

2 Peter 1:20-21
…Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

The writing of Scripture, Peter explains, did not come about by men sitting down to write whatever they pleased. God worked through each author to deliver his intended message. The words “carried along” were used by Luke to describe a sailing vessel moved with the wind (Acts 27:15, 17). All Scripture is “God-breathed” as the writers were moved or “carried along” by the Holy Spirit.

J.I Packer says it well: “All [the Bible’s] manifold contents—histories, prophecies, poems, songs, wisdom, writings, sermons, statistics, letters, and whatever else—should be received as from God, and all that the Bible writers teach should be revered as God’s authoritative instruction. Christians should be grateful to God for the gift of his written Word, and conscientious in basing their faith and life entirely and exclusively upon it. Otherwise, we cannot ever honor or please him as he calls us to do” (Concise Theology, 5).

Father, we are grateful for the gift of your written Word. May we never take this gift for granted. Help us to be hearers and doers of every truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
