The Day of the Lord

Scoffers are great at scoffing. Dripping with sarcasm, they asked the believers, “When is this so-called ‘coming’ that Jesus promised?” Facing persecution, the believers were wondering the same thing. No doubt many were thinking, “Lord, if you are going to come back, this would really be a good time!” So, Peter gives an explanation and encouragement.

2 Peter 3:8-9
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

First, Peter explains that while God works within time, his eternal mind does not think in terms of twenty-four-hour days, seven-day weeks, or twelve-month years. The passing of generation after generation after generation on earth is simply a slight blip on the eternal radar. God is not slow; he exists in an eternal time frame.

Second, Peter encourages the believers by reminding them of God’s character. What some might see as “slowness” is really his patience. He is providing time for all his children to “reach repentance.” He will make sure all are safely home before he finally and forever closes the door. God’s patience is a demonstration of his love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and salvation. He can be trusted…all the way to heaven.

Father, thank you for waiting on us to reach repentance. Thank you for your promise to bring all your children safely home. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your love, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and salvation. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
