Speaking and Serving

The apostle Peter was all about focus and clarity. The gospel of Mark, believed by most theologians to be Peter’s words recorded by Mark, is straightforward, hard-hitting, and action-packed. In our passage today, Peter takes all the potential spiritual gifts (see Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, Ephesians 4) and lists them in two broad categories—speaking and serving.

1 Peter 4:10-11
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

For those with the gifts of speaking (teaching, preaching, etc.), Peter warns of the heavy responsibility. Just as James counseled that not many should become teachers because they “will be judged with greater strictness” (James 3:1), Peter puts forth the sobering truth that those with teaching gifts speak “oracles of God.” Those with the gifts of service (leadership, helps, etc.) should not think that they are serving by their own strength or for personal recognition. Believers must minister faithfully “by the strength that God supplies” with the end goal of glorifying God.

This highlights the proper perspective. If I use my gift of teaching to craft a “sermon lite” to entertain with personal antidotes and humorous stories, the pews may be filled, but hearts will remain empty…and…God is not impressed. If I exercise my gift of leadership to “take the hill” for my own personal gain, there will be a heavy price to pay. We are simply instruments in the hands of God. Our gifts must be purposed to glorify him and to benefit his church. Any other motive is out of line.

Father, thank you for gifting your children. May we never use our gifts for personal recognition or gain but help us always use them to bring honor and glory to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
