Sin That Dogs Our Feet

by | May 15, 2023 | Daily Devotion, Living Hope | 0 comments

Every believer has…at least…one. Just when you think you’ve knocked it down, it stands right back up. Just when you say, “Mastered!” you find yourself stooping to serve it again. Just when you think you’ve starved it to death, there you are, feeding the monster. The writer of Hebrews calls it “the sin that so easily entangles.” (Hebrews 12:1 NIV). As one writer says, “[It is] the sin that dogs our feet” (Phillips).

In our passage today, Peter likens these sinful snares to soldiers coming to make war. Equipped with the tanks of anger, missiles of greed, swords of lust, and automatic weapons of pride, these “soldiers” come to attack your soul. These soldiers of sin seek to destroy us or render us useless and ineffective. A broken and wounded follower of Jesus is just as useless as one who has been wrecked.

1 Peter 2:11
Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

Peter says that when these soldiers show up, do battle with them! Empowered by the Spirit—fight back. Don’t allow them to have entry into your heart. Practically, this means…
…being in God’s Word—the sword of the Spirit—every day.
…implementing safeguards that protect you from seamy internet sites.
…retreating from anger when you find your blood starting to “boil.”
…praying for God’s peace.
…serving others (an antidote to pride).
…giving generously (an antidote for greed).

All believers have sin “that dogs our feet.” Take the necessary steps to keep it at a distance.

Father, remind us that staying close to Jesus involves some very practical steps. Give us insight into our hearts, honesty to admit our sin, and courage to do something about it. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
