Responding to Suffering

Peter wrote his first letter from Rome in late AD 64/early AD 65 during intense persecution. The mistreatment normally started in the larger cities and then spread throughout the countryside. Peter wrote to believers in what is today Northern Turkey. He wrote to warn and prepare them for the undoubtedly tough times ahead. Peter explained that Jesus was the example of how to respond to suffering.

1 Peter 2:21-23
For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.

The Savior’s suffering was not a result of sinful actions or dishonest words. Jesus was sinless, which is why he is the only One who could die for sin and pay its penalty. When the insults came, he did not react and get even with his accusers, although he had the power to do so. Throughout the beatings, floggings, and crucifixion, he asked the Father to forgive those putting him to death.

Jesus taught us how to respond to suffering. He humbled himself, submitted himself, and entrusted himself to the heavenly Father. In our suffering, we must do the same.

Lord Jesus, thank you for bearing my sin on the cross and receiving the judgment that should have been mine. Thank you for your example of how to entrust our suffering to our heavenly Father. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
