Requesting a Favor

James and John sent their mother to request a favor from Jesus. She asked that when he established his kingdom, her two sons be given a special place of power and position. Once the other disciples learned of this query, they were “indignant.” Peter must have been particularly irritated. Along with James and John, he made up Jesus’ inner circle. But as always, Jesus turned the situation into an important teaching moment.

Jesus explained to his disciples that in his kingdom, leaders would not “lord it over” others. Instead, leaders would be servants. He would set the standard by showing that he “came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:26-28). Peter watched Jesus demonstrate this servant-leadership all the way to the cross.

1 Peter 5:2-3
…Shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock.

So, Peter passed on what he learned from Jesus. Leaders must be servants and examples to “shepherd the flock” that God has graciously entrusted to them. Leadership is a great privilege and responsibility. Leaders in the kingdom must follow the Lord’s plan.

Father, I pray for leaders. Give us courage to lead. Give us tender hearts to serve. Help us be wise and humble. Give us vision and grace. Help us to lead like Jesus. In his name. Amen.
