Living Stones

Peter made it clear in 1 Peter 2:4 that Jesus is the “living stone.” In the following verse, he makes it clear that by “stone,” he, like Paul, means “cornerstone” (1 Peter 2:6, Ephesians 2:20). Jesus is the One upon which all things are built and by which all things are aligned. All spiritual life comes through and depends on Jesus.

Because of their relationship to Jesus, believers are like “living stones.” Our new birth, brought about by the work of Christ, gives us true life, now and forever. Indwelt by the Holy Spirit, we are a “spiritual house,” the “temple of the living God” (2 Corinthians 6:16). Continuing with the Old Testament analogy, Peter says that we are “to be a holy priesthood….”

1 Peter 2:5
…You yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

There are many things we could say about the priests of the Old Testament, but let’s focus on two takeaways. First, the priest had direct access to God. Now, we have that same access through Jesus Christ. He is seated at the right hand of God, interceding for us (Romans 8:34). Second, the priests represented God to the people. Now that assignment is ours. How are you doing with that responsibility? As my mom used to say, “You may be the only Bible some people ever read.”

Father, thank you for making us “like living stones” through your Son. Thank you for the direct access we have to you through Jesus. Today may we represent you well in all we do and say. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
