Cornerstone

In his writing, the apostle Peter often referred to the Old Testament to make his point about Jesus. In today’s passage, Peter cites Isaiah 28:16. Here, he likens Jesus to the “cornerstone chosen and precious” used to build a secure and sure foundation.

1 Peter 2:6
For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

In the Middle East, large cornerstones were put in place to determine the integrity of the structure. The rest of the building was aligned with this stone. One such stone has been found by archaeologists that measured 69 ft. x 12 ft. x 13 ft.! (Expository Bible Commentary, p. 230). Isaiah uses this picture to challenge his audience to build their lives on the Lord, the One who is immovable and unchangeable. Peter’s application of this passage follows: Jesus is the sure foundation, the “cornerstone chosen and precious.” Whoever builds their life on Jesus will never be shamed or disappointed.

Take a moment to prayerfully evaluate if you are building on Jesus, the precious cornerstone.

Father, we are tempted to build our lives on many things. Today help us to discern if our secure and sure foundation is Jesus. In his name. Amen.
