Cornerstone

Quoting Psalm 118:22, Peter likens those who do not believe as a builder who foolishly decided to forgo the most important detail of the project. The cornerstone, defined as “the chief foundation on which something is constructed,” determined the alignment and integrity of the building. Only a misguided, reckless builder would “reject” the cornerstone. For believers, this “stone” must be the starting point.

1 Peter 2:7
So the honor is for you who believe, but for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone….”

For true believers, there is nothing more honored, valued, and respected than our relationship with Jesus, the “living stone” (1 Peter 2:4). To be in union with Jesus provides abundant life with him now and eternity with him later. His Spirit lives within us to teach, challenge, comfort, and, yes, convict us of sin that will take us down dangerous paths.

C. H. Spurgeon says that hidden within Jesus are “all the precious things of the eternal covenant; and there he shall forever remain, the foundation of all our hopes, the glory of all our joys, the uniting bond of all our fellowship” (Treasury of David, vol.3, p. 110).

Lord Jesus, thank you for being the “foundation of all our hopes,” “the glory of all our joys,” and the “uniting bond of all our fellowship.” We pray in your precious name. Amen.
