At Peace

2 Peter 3:14
Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.

The true believer has eternal security. No one can snatch us out of God’s hand (John 10:27-30). Nothing can separate us from his love (Romans 8:38-39). Our imperishable inheritance is kept in heaven for us “who through faith are shielded by God’s power” (1 Peter 1:3-5 NIV). But the assurance of our salvation does not allow us to live a sloppy spiritual life.

As we look forward to the day when our final salvation will be revealed and the new heavens and earth arrive (2 Peter 3:13), Peter reminds us to “be diligent” to arrive home “without spot or blemish, and at peace.” Our standing with God does not give us a license to sin. Rather, it provides the basis and motivation for obedience.

So, take a moment for a self-assessment. Any “spots” you need to deal with? Have you slipped into an area of sin? Any tension between you and God due to disobedience? Confess your sin before him. Find his forgiveness and cleansing. Peace with God makes our hearts beat with true confidence and security.

Father, may our assessment not be surface. Help us admit our sin before you, seek your forgiveness, and know your peace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
