[expand title=”Devotion Text”]Samuel, Hannah’s son who she dedicated to the Lord, grew up in the temple. Unfortunately, the priest’s sons did not serve as godly mentors. So, it was time to make a change. God called out to Samuel three times before he got the young boy’s attention. But the Lord kept calling.
1 Samuel 3:10
And the LORD came and stood, calling as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant hears.”
Prayer is having a conversation with God…and that includes listening to him. Our prayers can’t be a bombardment of requests with an “Amen” at the end. One-way conversations do not constitute healthy communication. Settling our hearts before God, sitting quietly, and listening to him speak to us is an essential part of prayer. Will God speak to us in an audible voice as he did with Samuel? Most likely not. But in the stillness of our hearts and in the reading of his Word, he speaks clearly. Our prayer focus today is simply this, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Talking Points
- Confess your inclination to do all the talking. Commit to making listening a part of your conversation with God.
- Ask God to help you be a better listener. Ask God to quiet your heart in order to hear his voice as he speaks to you through his Spirit and through his Word.
Father, forgive me for my penchant to do all the talking. Speak to me, Lord, for your servant is listening. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
