Light Shines

Mark 4:21-23

He said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand? For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open. If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.

Imagine walking into a house where every light has been hidden. Cardboard boxes are taped over all the ceiling lights. Heavy cloth is draped over every lamp. Flashlights are hidden in a wooden box and shoved under a bed. Candles are in storage and there is no match or lighter in the house. Certainly, the darkness would make it difficult if not impossible to maneuver throughout the house.

Now imagine a life lit by the Light of the World—Jesus Christ. But then sin dulls the brilliance. Silence is taped over the message. Christ’s work in our lives is hidden in a box and shoved to the back corners of our hearts. Is it possible for a believer to hide the Light?

The Light of Christ can never be put “under a bowl or a bed.” We must let the Light shine through us in such a way that the people in our world can see the brilliance of Jesus. If you are concealing the Light, it’s time to bring Jesus out into the open!

Father, please don’t let me hide Jesus by my sin or silence. Shine through me in such a way that every person in my world sees the Light of the World. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
