Light in the Darkness: Following the Example

by | Dec 30, 2023 | Daily Devotion, Light in the Darkness | 0 comments

The systems of the world are built around power and control. Nations go to war to gain land, resources, and domination. Organizations intimidate opponents to manipulate and wield their authority. Individuals demonstrate their influence over others to show who’s the boss. Jesus, however, turned the tables.

Matthew 20:25-28
But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

For those who follow Jesus, there is a different standard. True greatness is measured by humility and service. In Christ’s model, if you want to be first in line, you must go to the back of the line. If you want to be first, be last. If you want to be great in God’s eyes, become a servant. Jesus backed up his words with his life. He left heaven to hang on a cross. He did not come to be served but to serve and give his life a ransom for many. In death, he demonstrated the ultimate act of service.

Following hard after Jesus is not about positions of honor or power. The rewards are given to those willing to serve wherever and whenever they are needed. Many times that will mean no one will notice except Jesus. He looks deep into the heart and sees our motives and intentions. He is looking for those willing to follow his example.

Lord Jesus, thank you for teaching me about service and showing me how to serve. May I follow hard after you as my Savior and follow your example of true service. In your name I pray. Amen.

As we wrap up another year, I want to thank you for engaging in God’s Word with me every day. It is a privilege to have this time with you.  On January 1, we will begin a 31-day devotional series called Standing Firm in Unshakable Faith. With everything going on in our world, we want to stand firm in the confidence we have because of Jesus. Invite a friend or someone in your family to join us so we can stand firm together.
