Keeping It Fresh

[expand title=”Devotion Text”]John 14:25-26

All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

The disciples had an amazing experience. For the better part of three years, they were with Jesus. They walked with Him on the roads. They ate with Him. They watched Him perform miracles. They listened to Jesus teach — publicly and privately. How could they remember everything they had heard?

Before He went to the cross, Jesus reminded His disciples that the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, would be coming. One of the ministries of the Spirit was to remind the disciples what Jesus had said and clarify the deep spiritual truths. The Spirit would bring the teaching of Jesus to life in the hearts and minds of the disciples and inspire them to record Christ’s words for us.

When believers read Scripture today it is the same Holy Spirit who teaches us. He takes the written word and helps us understand it and apply it to our lives. Have you experienced a passage that you’ve read countless times but it jumps from the page on a particular day? That’s the work of the Spirit driving a needed truth home.

Father, thank You for Your Spirit. Keep the truths vibrant, fresh, and relevant as I read Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
