Judges 16:28

Then Samson called to the LORD and said, “O Lord GOD, please remember me and please strengthen me only this once, O God, that I may be avenged on the Philistines for my two eyes.

PBS’s documentary on former President Bill Clinton is a four-hour treatment of his eight years in the White House. Unfortunately, many of those years (starting with his first campaign) were filled with scandal. Looking back on the time they served with him, many of his cabinet members and closest advisors celebrated the accomplishments but wondered what might have been accomplished without all the distractions.

Samson’s twenty years of service for the nation of Israel was yet another administration filled with distractions. From his demand to marry a Philistine woman to their “kind of” wedding, from high stake riddles to victory poems, from great physical strength to emotional immaturity, Samson’s life was a train wreck…a life of “what could have been.” Finally, it all ended in the Philistine temple when Samson, performing a strongman’s circus act, literally brought the house down killing more Philistines in his death than during his life.

Sad, isn’t it, when a person bought with the blood of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit allows distractions to derail their mission and ends with a life of “what could have been.”

Talking Points

  • Ask God to point out your Samson-size distractions. Ask God for the strength and determination to confess them and refocus.
  • Ask God to do the same in the life of your children and grandchildren. If you have teens, plead with God to keep their focus on him.

Father, take away the distractions that keep me from you. Help me understand and apply the power of your Holy Spirit. Don’t let me waste my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Keep asking God to point out the distractions in your life.
