Job’s Covenant

Job 31:1

I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman.

Long before adult magazines, adult programming, and the dark side of the Internet, there was lust – the uncontrolled or illicit sexual desire or appetite. Lust lives in the heart long before it is aroused through the gates of the mind. Job made an agreement with his “gatekeepers.”

Temptation isn’t a sin. It’s the giving in to the longing that causes the fall. Job made a pact with his eyes, to refrain from the second and third or even a fixed look at the opposite sex that might catch his attention. Job’s statement, “I made a covenant” is not a casual, “I probably shouldn’t do that.” Rather, it was a serious commitment saying, “I won’t do that!”

I encourage every man to read Every Man’s Battle by Stephen Arterburn. The book reminds us how easy it is to fall in this area and gives practical help on how to make the same commitment Job made. I have only had one man tell me he was not tempted in this area. Unfortunately, his denial led to a fall. Don’t deny the temptation. Take steps, like Job, to live obediently.

Father, some reading this today have given in to the sin of lust. Give them the courage to admit their sin, confess it, and get the help they need to make Job’s covenant. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
