Impulse

Luke 9:57-58

As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”

A man ran up to Jesus and blurted out, “I will follow you wherever you go.” I expect Jesus to embrace this guy and say, “Fantastic! Welcome to the group! Let me introduce you to Peter and the gang.” But Jesus saw the heart behind the words. Jesus knew that the man didn’t fully understand the seriousness of his statement.

Jesus, in essence, told the man that he was being impulsive. This man really didn’t understand what following Jesus meant. He was more concerned with being a part of the group than being a true follower. He wanted to be a part of community without understanding the cost of community.

What about you? Are you all in? Jesus calls us to hold nothing back. He calls us to live full out for Him. Think about how our families, schools, churches, and neighborhoods would be changed if those who say they are all in were really all in. Count the cost and join the journey with Christ.

Lord Jesus, help me never to follow You on impulse. Help me follow You full out. In Your name. Amen.
