[expand title=”Devotion Text”]Jeremiah 37:1
Zedekiah son of Josiah was made king of Judah by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; he reigned in place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim. Neither he nor his attendants nor the people of the land paid any attention to the words the LORD had spoken through Jeremiah the prophet.
Josiah was a great ruler; his son was not. Zedekiah was a puppet king controlled by Nebuchadnezzar. But that wasn’t his biggest problem. As today’s passage states, neither he nor his leaders paid any attention to the words of the Lord. And the people of the land followed their lead. They ignored what God said through Jeremiah the prophet.
Ignorance of God’s Word is one thing. But ignoring God’s Word is something entirely different. Not knowing an instruction of Scripture does not nullify our sin, but it means we acted unaware. However, knowing God’s instruction and choosing to ignore it demonstrates a rebellious spirit and a disregard for the Author.
How are you doing with the Scripture that you know? Are you obeying it or choosing to ignore it? Are you striving to follow the instruction or electing to pay no attention to it? The consequence of ignorance is sad. The consequence of ignoring God’s Word is tragic.
Father, may we not be simply hearers but also doers of Your Word. We have no excuse for ignorance. We certainly have no excuse for not paying attention to Scripture. Forgive us for our ignorance and our disregarding spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
