Exodus 17:10-12

So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Do you ever feel like the burden is just too heavy? Overwhelming? You are worn out by the weight? You are in good company. That’s just how Moses felt.

Knowing that Israel was still learning the ways of desert travel, the Amalekites took advantage of Israel’s vulnerable state and went on the attack. Moses sent Joshua to lead the fighting men in battle while he stood on the top of a hill to oversee the skirmish…and to pray. When Moses kept his staff held over his head, symbolizing Israel’s dependence on God, the troops drove the Amalekites back. But when Moses lowered his hands due to fatigue, the Amalekites gained the advantage. Moses needed help. Two men, Aaron and Hur, came to his aid. They held up the worn-out arms of Moses and victory was secured.

Talking Points

• Ask God to give you the humility to seek help. Don’t let your pride get in the way. Without Aaron and Hur supporting Moses, Israel would have lost the battle. Everybody wins when you ask for help.
• Pray that God will bring to your mind a person going through a difficult time. Let that person know that you are holding them up in prayer.

And…remain in a posture of dependence throughout the day.
