Hear, you peoples, all of you, listen, earth and all who live in it, that the Sovereign LORD may bear witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple.
The name “Micah” means “Who is like the Lord?” And the prophet Micah writes a message to explain that there is no one like our God. He dwells in His holy temple, heaven itself. When He comes, the “earth and all who live in it” will know that God is the Sovereign LORD.
One commentator has written that Micah’s message “alternates between oracles of doom and oracles of hope.” He shows compassion in declaring God’s coming judgment and promises of justice. Some may have trouble with that last sentence. How can God show compassion in judgment? The answer is straightforward. Sometimes the greatest demonstration of compassion is judgment. God’s love moves Him to discipline us when we move away from Him, into the dangers of sin.
Maybe that’s where you find yourself today. Like the prodigal son, you have moved to a distant country far from your loving Father. You know what it’s like to lose the things you loved, to squander resources, to be alone, to be covered with the pig slop of sin. But the loving Father waits. He waits for you to tire of the consequences of living away from Him. He waits for you to come to your senses. He waits for you with open arms. Time for you to make that journey back home, isn’t it?
Father, I am tired of living away from You. I am tired of all the self-inflicted consequences of my sin. I am sorry for sinning against You and others whom I love. I want to come back home. Give me the strength to get up and return. I long for Your forgiveness and loving embrace. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
