[expand title=”Devotion Text”]Acts 26:22-23
But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen—that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.
The good news about Jesus is not a New Testament phenomenon. His story didn’t start after the Old Testament ended. To those in Paul’s day who claimed that Paul was promoting a new religion, he made it clear that he was saying “nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen.” Let’s take a quick review of the prophet Isaiah’s words seven hundred years before Jesus came.
- The Messiah would suffer…
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. -Isaiah 53:5
- First to rise from the dead…
After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied…. –Isaiah 53:11a
- The message of light…
And now the LORD says… “It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” -Isaiah 49:5-6
- Remember the conversation that the resurrected Jesus had with the two men on the road to Emmaus? They didn’t recognize Him and were lamenting His death. Jesus said, “Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” Then “beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself” (Luke 24:26-27). The entire Old Testament shouts, “Jesus is coming!” And the New Testament celebrates and proclaims the fact that He has come.
Father, thank You for making it known from the beginning of Scripture that Jesus was coming. Now that He has come and His work is completed, help me worship Him every day of my life. In His name. Amen.
