God’s Will

2 Samuel 2:1

After this David inquired of the LORD, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.”

David’s predecessor, King Saul, was dead. Now, David wore the crown. For ten years a jealous Saul had chased David around the country trying to kill him. During that time, in the stress of the moment, David made a few regrettable decisions. David knew that as a leader, a wrong step could be disastrous for the entire nation. So, his first act as king was a conversation with God.

God didn’t answer David’s request with audible words. Most likely, the answer came through the intercession of the high priest, Abiathar (2 Sam 20:20; 23:1, 4, 9, 10). Today we don’t have a high priest but One much better. The Holy Spirit lives within each believer to guide us by means of Scripture, circumstances, godly counsel from godly friends, and his voice speaking within our hearts.

So, slow down. Inquire of the Lord. As parents, grandparents, and leaders, our decisions matter. They not only impact us but all those we influence.

Talking Points

  • Father, slow me down and help me speak with you about my decisions. As a parent, grandparent, and leader, my decisions make a lasting impact on me and my family. Through your Word, godly counsel, and the voice of the Holy Spirit, help me know your will.
  • Lord, as you share your will with me, help me to do it.

I have written a discipleship study called Living Grounded. The purpose of the study is to help believers embrace the foundational truths of the Christian faith. One session in the book deals with discovering God’s will. To get a copy of Living Grounded, contact The Bible Chapel bookstore, biblechapel.org/bookstore.

I want to take this time to thank you for the
