Genesis 16:13

So [Hagar] called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God of seeing,” for she said, “Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.”

Sarah could not have children, so she decided to give her Egyptian maidservant, Hagar, to her husband. Abraham agreed. It was a bad idea followed by a bad decision. When Hagar became pregnant, Sarah despised her and treated Hagar so badly that she had to run for her life. But God found Hagar in her distress and ministered to her in an intimate way. In her gratitude, Hagar called God—El Roi, which means, “The Strong One who sees me.” In amazement and awe, Hagar said, “Truly, here I have seen him who looks after me.”

Maybe today you are feeling a lot like Hagar. You feel rejected and alone, fending for yourself in the desert. The desert is a dry place, spiritually and emotionally. But remember, your heavenly Father is El Roi—the God who sees you.  He is well aware of your situation. He is right there with you. El Roi will never leave your side. He will always look after you.

Talking Points

  • Tell El Roi all that is on your heart—the challenges before you, the things that bring you anxiety. Thank God for being El Roi—the One who sees you right where you are and will always look after you.
  • God is the One who sees your children today. Tell El Roi who they are by name and what they are facing. Thank God for being the loving Father who looks after your children (and grandchildren).

And…keep talking to God throughout the day.
