God Rules Over All

Ezra 1:1

In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah, the LORD moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing….

God rules over all. The teaching of His sovereignty throughout Scripture is clear. The hearts of the kings of the world are like “channels of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he wishes” (Proverbs 21:1).

God built a great nation under King David and King Solomon, but after their reign the kingdom became divided. Due to the ongoing sins of the nation, God’s people were overthrown by the Assyrians and Babylonians. The walls of Jerusalem were torn down and the temple destroyed. In His perfect timing, God “moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia” to allow the Israelites to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple.

We will not always understand God’s timing and ways, but we can be sure of this . . . God is sovereign over all. Nothing takes Him by surprise. His perfect plan for nations will be carried out.  And His perfect plan for your life will be carried out.

Father, we acknowledge You as the God who is in complete control. We trust You, Your ways, and Your timing to carry out Your perfect will in our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
