God Most High

Genesis 14:19-20

Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.

After Abram (God later changed the name to Abraham) defeated Kedorlaomer, Abram rescued his nephew, Lot, and met Melchizadek, the priest of God Most High— in Hebrew, El-Elyon. The priest blessed Abram “by God Most High” and acknowledged God as the “Creator of heaven and earth.” Melchizadek also praised El-Elyon as the one who had given Abram victory over his enemies.

El-Elyon means “Highest” or “Exalted One.” This name describes God’s sovereignty and supremacy. He sovereignly protects and delivers his people. He is supreme over all the false gods we are tempted to worship. In the New Testament, Jesus is called the “Son of the Most High.” The Holy Spirit is called “the power of the Most High.” And true believers are called “servants of the Most High.”

A child of God does not have to live a hand-wringing life filled with fear and anxiety. Our Father is one whose power cannot be matched. He is in control of all things. Nothing catches him off guard or takes him by surprise. You can trust him with your life, along with all your issues and concerns. He gave Abram victory over his enemies. He can handle your challenges as well.

God Most High,

I acknowledge you as the highest, most exalted God. You are all-powerful and in complete control of all things. You are the Creator of heaven and earth. There is none like you. I give my fears, anxieties, and challenges over to you. I am unable to defeat the things that stand in my way, but you are the One who brings victory every time. Thank you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
