Joshua 10:14

There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel!

Joshua led his entire army on an all-night march and caught the kings of the Amorites by surprise. The Lord threw the Amorites into confusion, “hurled large hailstones down on them from the sky,” and in answer to Joshua’s prayer for more fighting time, caused the sun to stop “in the middle of the sky.” Indeed, “the Lord was fighting for Israel!”

Amazingly, God altered the creation pattern of day and night. But the most amazing thing in this story is not the sun stopping in the middle of the sky. It is the fact that the holy eternal God listens to man. And you know what? He still does.

Our prayers are not for the alteration of the sun’s pattern, but they involve God’s miraculous work just the same – salvation of a loved one, physical healing, strength to be a good witness through an illness, the determination to resist a temptation or the restoration of a relationship. And the miracle is that the holy God hears and answers our prayers. As the prophet says, “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear” (Isaiah 59:1).

Oh LORD, I call to you; come quickly to me. Hear my voice when I call to you. May my prayer be set before you like incense; may the lifting up of my hands be like the evening sacrifice (Psalm 141:1-2). In Jesus’ name. Amen.
