God is Omnipresent

Psalm 139:7-12
Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

God is not limited by time or space. He is present everywhere at the same time in His whole being. There is nowhere in the entire universe, on land or sea, in heaven or hell, that a person can go and get away from God.

Admittedly, there are times when this is a disturbing truth. In our rebellion we want to escape God’s presence. We don’t want Him around when we engage in sinful activities. But God doesn’t play hide and seek. Wherever we go, He is already there!

To be sure, most of the time this truth is comforting. Because of God’s omnipresence we are never alone. He is there in our laughter and our tears. He is there when we pump our fists with excitement and when we hang our heads in despair. He stands by our side as we watch our loved ones breathe their last. He walks with us from the grave and through our grief. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. The omnipresent God is Immanuel—God with us…through eternity.

Father, forgive me when I try to get away from You. Thank You for never leaving my side. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
