God Is My King

Psalms 74:12-17

But God is my King from long ago; he brings salvation on the earth. It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert. It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever- flowing rivers. The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.

Israel’s sin left the nation morally bankrupt and spiritually vulnerable. The Babylonians invaded and did major damage. Asaph, the writer of this psalm, cried out to God for mercy. In these verses, he takes a deep breath to reflect on the greatness of God.

King Zedekiah had already sold out to the Babylonians but Asaph declared that God was still his King. God is the One who brings salvation to His people and, in His time, crushes the enemy. He is the God of time and the God of seasons. He is the One who established the sun and moon above and the boundaries of the earth below. He is the all-powerful God who “split open the sea.”

We learn an important lesson from these verses: In challenging times reflect on the person of God. Make a list of His attributes. Thank Him for the great work of your salvation. Record the times you have seen His hand in your life. God’s person and work brings great confidence. Even when the walls are crumbling, you can say, like Asaph, “But God is my King….”

Father, I acknowledge You as my King, even when the walls are crumbling; even when the enemy is invading; even when my heart is breaking; even when the grief is heavy. Challenges will come, but you are my King! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
