Friend of Sinners

by | Feb 21, 2022 | Daily Devotion, Names of God | 1 comment

Jesus did not keep his distance from known “sinners” as was the practice of the religious leaders of his day. He spoke to a woman of ill repute at a well. He touched those who were sick. He ate with tax collectors, even calling one to be an apostle. Jesus regularly interacted with the religious and social outcasts. This passage records Jesus’ response to his critics.

Matthew 11:19

The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.

For sure, Jesus is Lord. One day every knee will bow, and every tongue confess that truth. And…Jesus is also our friend. He desires to know us. He wants to communicate with us. He wants to walk with us through the joys and challenges of life. Our Lord is our friend.

Before he died on the cross, Jesus had personal time with his disciples. He told them, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant, does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15). Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Lord Jesus,

Thank you for dying for me, a sinner. Thank you for paying the penalty for my sin. Thank you for desiring to have a personal relationship with me. Thank you for being my friend.

In your name, I thank you. Amen.
