Fresh Start: Transformed

Philippians 3:20-21
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

We can get settled in this life of ours. We describe our activities with words of permanence. We get married and “settle down.” We become “established” in our careers. We “build” a house. We acquire stuff—some cool stuff—that we appreciate and enjoy…sometimes a little too much. Our lives revolve around children and grandchildren. Our temporary journey on earth doesn’t feel temporary. It feels pretty much like home. We like it here.

But then we are reminded that our journey on earth is short-lived. A loved one dies, and heaven seems more real. An illness ravages our body, and we long for a place where we will be made whole. The aging process robs physical strength and mental soundness, and we long for our real home. Life reminds the believer that our citizenship is secure in heaven. We eagerly await our Savior. We yearn for our lowly bodies to be transformed.

I remember an old evangelist who used to answer the question, “Where are you headed?” with “Heaven, just passing through town on my way.” We truly are citizens of heaven, just passing through town on our way to our eternal home.

Lord Jesus, thank you for reminding us often that our current lives are temporary. Thank you that you will come, and we will be transformed…forever. Help us to keep looking up. Amen.
