Fresh Start: Strength in Weakness

Paul conceded that a “thorn was given [him] in the flesh.” We don’t know what it was, but he described it as “a messenger of Satan” sent to afflict him. Paul had been given a vision of heaven. He didn’t write a book about it or go on the talk show circuit. He had heard things “that cannot be told.” His “thorn” was to keep him from being conceited after this magnificent vision. Paul prayed three separate times for the “thorn” to be taken away, but instead of removing it, God gave Paul the promise found in today’s passage.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

God promised to give Paul all he needed. God’s grace would always be sufficient. Paul understood that his weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties would be the perfect platform for God to show his power. Paul demonstrated the divine paradox—“For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

You may be going through a very difficult time today. You feel weak and limited. You have prayed often for your “thorn” to be removed, but it remains. Could it be that your challenges are a platform for God’s power? Could it be that God is using your weaknesses to show his strength? I know this is not an easy assignment, but can you say with Paul, “For when I am weak, then I am strong.”? Say it again. God is using you in a powerful way…even in your limitations. Through our weaknesses, God gives us a fresh start.

Father, I pray for those going through a difficult time. Please let them feel the tangible comfort and peace of your presence. Let them know you understand how difficult their situation is. Show them that you are using their weakness for your glory. Remind them that you never waste our time. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
