Fresh Start: Jesus Understands

Hebrews 4:14-16
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Jesus understands. He gets what it’s like to be misunderstood. He dealt with being mistreated. Jesus understands the pain of rejection, even having his closest friends abandon him in his time of need. Jesus experienced what it feels like to lose a loved one, a dad, a friend. Jesus understands physical pain. He knows what it means to cry…and cry out to God.

Jesus understands. He experienced all the temptations that are common to man. He knows what the pull feels like. In fact, he understands the pull to its fullest extent. He was tempted just as we are, but he never gave in.

Because Jesus understands, we can approach God’s throne of grace with confidence. He will never be confused by or unfamiliar with our predicaments. He will never tell us to “buck it up” and come back when we have our act together. Jesus understands. And in our time of trial, he gives us all we need. He helps us stand and stay strong with a special portion of his grace and mercy. He is on our side. He is our friend. He understands.

Lord Jesus, we know you understand our walk because you were willing to leave heaven and take on human flesh from conception. We know you understand because you set aside every royal privilege to experience life in the rough and raw. Thank you for identifying with us as humans so we can have our identity in you as children of God. Thank you for the privilege of approaching your throne with confidence, knowing you are there to hear and help us in our time of need. Amen.
