Food That Endures

John 6:27

Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.

A philosopher once wrote: “I can only answer the question ‘What am I to do?’ if I answer the prior question, ‘Of what story do I find myself a part?’” Yes, I know it sounds like something a philosopher would say, but the point is valid. I don’t know what I am to do unless I know why and for whom I am doing it.

The true believer is part of God’s story. God’s Word provides the theme and chapters of our lives. Scripture provides the road to travel and the direction to go. If I believe I am writing my own story, I will make different decisions than if I believe I am a part of God’s story.

When I understand and accept that I am a part of God’s story, I will not spend my life working for food that spoils. I will invest in eternal things because I know God’s story is an eternal one. I will follow hard after Jesus because upon Him, the Father has placed His seal of approval. When I follow Jesus, I will always be doing the right thing as a part of the right story.

Father, thank You for including me in Your eternal story. I acknowledge it as a work of Your great grace. Help me follow hard after Your Son today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
