[expand title=”Devotion Text”]Job 42:1-6
Then Job replied to the LORD: “I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted. You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’ Surely I spoke of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know. You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me.’ My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.”
After tragedy struck, Job moved into the natural and normal period of questioning. But God abruptly confronted Job and refocused his vision. Job was looking at his situation; God said, “Look at me.” With his focus on God, Job saw three things.
First, Job saw God’s omnipotence. His power enables God to do anything He desires to do. Second, Job saw God’s incomprehensibility. God acts in ways our puny human minds simply cannot grasp. Even in tragedy, there are things “too wonderful for [us] to know.” Third, Job saw God at work. Job moved from knowledge about God to seeing and experiencing God. This overwhelming knowledge moved Job to repentance.
If you are going through a difficult situation, let me remind you that this change of heart doesn’t happen overnight. Through the healing process, God gives us time and space to ask our questions. Faith and doubt, courage and discouragement, strength, and weakness weave in and out of our emotions like the on-again-off-again warmth of the sun on a partially cloudy day. Keep looking for Him . . . even through your tears. Keep talking to Him . . . even with your questions. Keep trusting Him . . . even in your doubts. He loves you! He cares for you! You can trust Him!
Father, please shine Your comfort on those going through a great challenge. Hold them close to You. Help them experience Your presence. Help them to say with Job, “My ears had heard of you, but now my eyes have seen you.” In Christ’s name. Amen.
