[expand title=”Devotion Text”]Leviticus 23:1
The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the LORD, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.’”
In Leviticus 23, God instructed his people to reserve certain dates in their year for times of national public worship. The length of these festivals ranged from a one-day event to feasts that lasted several days. The feasts were purposed to provide rest, remember the poor, remember God’s deliverance, and show joy and thankfulness for God’s blessings.
While these feasts are not reinstituted in the New Testament, they are very instructive for the believer. The feasts provided a time to break away from everyday activities and focus on the Lord. They afforded a time of praise and worship. They were times to make things right with God. And each celebration provided a great time for families to come together to enjoy food and fellowship.
The feasts show me a side of God I often miss. He desires me to take a break. He wants me to get away and reconnect with him. And he must smile when he sees us enjoying food and fellowship with other believers. We don’t need to reinstitute the feasts. But we do need to reserve dates on our calendars, other than Sunday mornings, to get away, enjoy our heavenly Father and have fellowship with other believers.
Father, help us schedule times of retreat, relaxation, and fellowship. Pry us away from our busy lives and allow us to reconnect with you and other believers. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
