“The word of the LORD you have spoken is good,” Hezekiah replied. For he thought, “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?”
Hezekiah was a king who “did what was right in the eyes of the LORD.” He “trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel” and “held fast to the LORD.” But then, in a strange turn of events, a flaw surfaced.
Hezekiah became deathly ill, and God graciously answered Hezekiah’s prayer for healing and added fifteen years to his life. But when well-wishers from Babylon showed up, Hezekiah, thankful for their visit, became an open book. There was “nothing in his palace or kingdom” that he did not show them. God was not pleased and told Hezekiah that his descendants would be “eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” Hezekiah’s response is found in today’s passage. In essence, he said, “Well, at least things will be good during my lifetime.”
Stumbling at the end is a danger for everyone. Unfortunately, last impressions are enduring ones. It is not just about our lives; it’s about the legacy we leave. We thank God when things are good during our lifetime…and…we don’t want to hinder good things for the lives of those who follow.
Father, keep me holding fast to You until the day You call me home. Help me not to stumble as I near the finish line. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
