Mark 14:3

And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.

On Wednesday, before going to the cross, Jesus told his disciples that he would be crucified. The religious leaders made plans to seize him. Judas made plans to betray him. And a woman made plans to worship him. She poured a jar of expensive perfume on the head of Jesus.

Picture the scene. While the disciples were worried about the waste, a woman, very quietly and tenderly, demonstrated deep devotion. She took perfume worth a year’s wages and expressed extravagant worship. She understood that worship was more than an hour on the weekend. Jesus said, “…truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.” Jesus loves extravagant worshipers.

That night as Jesus lay on his bed, he alone knew it would be his last time to sleep until the painful death of the cross. And as he closed his eyes, he smelled the fragrance of the perfume sacrificially given to show love and honor.

Talking to God

Father, too often my worship is planned and measured. I fit it into my budget and busy schedule. Extravagant is not a word used to describe my response to you. Help me change that. Drive my devotion deeper. Help me offer a fragrant sacrifice. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
