Eternal Truth into Tender Hearts

Psalm 127

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.

Parenting has always been challenging. Just consider these mothers from the past. Columbus’ mother: “I don’t care what you’ve discovered, you still could have written!” Michelangelo’s mother: “Can’t you paint on walls like other children? Do you have any idea how hard it is to get that stuff off the ceiling?” Paul Revere’s mother: “I don’t care where you think you have to go, young man, midnight is past your curfew!” Albert Einstein’s mother: “But it’s your senior picture. Can’t you do something about your hair?” And you thought you had it hard!!

Children are a gift from God…even in the most demanding times. What you teach your children will stay with them always. What you fail to teach can be learned from no one else. You can tenderly build into young minds and hearts an understanding of unconditional love, genuine kindness, and a belief system that will provide direction for life.

I know that your life is filled with exhausting chores and countless distractions. But in the midst of it all don’t miss the privilege of being with your children and taking advantage of those God-given teachable moments. God has given you the responsibility and privilege to implant eternal truth in tender hearts.

Father, give strength to moms and dads exhausted by early mornings, late nights, and interruptions to their sleep. Provide perspective to parents working hard to make ends meet and trying to carve out the needed time for their families. Remind parents how fast the time goes and help them take advantage of every opportunity to implant your truth in tender hearts. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
