[expand title=”Devotion Text”]Isaiah 22:12-13
The Lord, the LORD Almighty, called you on that day to weep and to wail, to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth. But see, there is joy and revelry, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine! “Let us eat and drink,” you say, “for tomorrow we die!”
God loves His children too much to let them wallow in their sin. He gets our attention one way or another. When Israel lived in blatant disobedience, God disciplined them to stop their rebellion and turn their hearts back to Him. With the enemy on the way, God called on His people to repent of their sin. Instead, they lived it up with food and drink. They neither turned to God for deliverance nor feared their eternal destiny.
“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die” describes a philosophy that leaves God entirely out of the picture and faces death without a belief in eternal life. Paul quotes this passage in 1 Corinthians 15:32 to show the futility of life – present and future – without God. This belief that death is the end of existence produces a self-absorbed life bent on immediate pleasure.
The Bible, however, presents a different belief system. Believers know that man is an eternal being headed for eternity with or without God – heaven or hell. Believers understand that only through Christ can we know God now and enjoy Him forever. But do we live like we truly believe that truth? Do we believe that we will one day stand before Christ and give an explanation of our lives? Do we really believe that the life we live today will determine the account we give tomorrow?
Father, it’s too easy for us to focus on the here and now and forget the hereafter. It’s too easy for us to aim at pleasure and possessions, leave You out of the picture and think that we will never have to give an account. Shake us out of such false thinking. Help us make each day on this earth count for You. Remind us that what we do today will need an explanation tomorrow. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
